Every single tourist is familiar with Bondi Beach but just around the corner, you’ll find Tamarama beach, smaller, slightly quieter but equally beautiful beach.
If you are doing the popular Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk and starting at Bondi this is the very next beach you come to.
It’s only a fraction of the length of Bondi and whereas Bondi stretches on for a kilometre or so, Tamarama is hemmed in by two prominent sandstone headlands and rocky platforms.
It’s very scenic and has long been known as ‘Glamourama', a playground for ‘beautiful people’ and Instagrammers.
It's not necessarily the best beach for everyone. Unpredictable surf conditions and strong currents can combine to cause tricky rips and shifting sandbars. Weak swimmers and tourists unused to surf conditions should be a little cautious.
The beach is patrolled and has a park with a cafe, playground and BBQs but overall, it’s less family friendly than other beaches. Bronte Beach with its ocean pool and calm, gentle ‘Bogey Hole’ is a better family option.
We walked by recently and noticed that the iconic Tamarama SLS clubhouse, perched on the cliff top, is undergoing a complete renovation. Established in 1906, the aqua blue and custard yellow clubhouse has long been a recognisable feature of Tamarama and will be missed.

Tamarama**++ is my kind of beach. Narrow and bookended by high headlands, with nice sand and a friendly vibe, it’s a good place to be.
Jammed at the head of a narrow gully it sounds like lack of room may be a problem but in fact though narrow it is plenty deep and even at its busiest I’ve never had trouble finding room to spread a towel. The flat rocks of neighbouring MCKENZIES BAY++ immediately north offer a good spill over zone.
The beach attracts a colourful crowd – it gets more than its share of LGBT people and so there is no lack of beautiful, toned and cut bodies.
In back of the beach is a nice park with a good cafe and change sheds (both new since my visit last year).
But the thing stopping it from being excellent is dangerous surf. The narrowness of the inlet and its SE orientation mean big surf and tricky rips are common. There is a permanent rip near the SW rocks called the BRONTE EXPRESS – that’s where you’ll end up if you don’t swim sideways out of it.
TIPS – if caught in a rip tread water (a minimal effort activity – don’t try and swim against it, even strong swimmers will become exhausted). Raise your hand and wait for the lifeguards or a surfer to pick you up. Tamarama lifeguards are excellent and very vigilant of dangerous conditions. If you are a fair swimmer you can swim SIDEWAYS out of a rip (they tend to be narrow) and make your own way back to the beach.
- MCKENZIES BAY has some nice rock gutters and pools for a dip. Be careful when the surf is big. It’s a good place to watch kamikaze surfers from higher rocks when the surf is huge.
- TAMARAMA is connected by a cliffside walking path which comes from SOUTH BONDI via MCKENZIES POINT and BAY. This has some of the best coastal scenery around and is very popular with tourists and exercisers. You can continue on from TAMARAMA via a roadside footpath to BRONTE BCH**++ about 1km south.
- several years ago there was a small beach at MCKENZIES BAY – offshore sand had moved onshore in mild sea conditions. Only lasted until normal waves picked up.
- there is a free path-side exercise station++ at MCKENZIES BAY.

Nice quiet beach next to bondi, best to get there is to walk or catch a bus cos parking can be stressful.
If you are not a good swimmer I advice you to avoid the rocks or swimming if the weather conditions are not good.

Along the Bondi to Coogee trail, I believe this is the best beach in my opinion. It’s the most well rounded, has a bit of everything beach; not so crowded, nice clean sand, outstanding views, nice little green park behind the beach, bbq facilities on offer, public toilets, little public gym area and of course that beautiful blue water. Personally I prefer this than the crowded and touristy Bondi Beach, but just depends on your own tastes.

Yes it’s a small beach and probably used by locals mainly. Pass by on the Coogee to Bondi walk, backed by gardens, it’s definitely worth a stop by here.

This was the first beach we went to when we arrived in Sydney, and it was so nice! The only thing is that it is quite small and busy, so we didn't find an amazing spot to lay down. Also, the sand has some wooden things (like small sticks) that might hurt your feet if you're not careful.

Great if you want to bodysurf and are a sttrong confident swimmer, dangerous if not. Absolutely some of Sydney's best surf if you are in the first category. For the rest there is people watching, Sydney's beautiful people come here to meet.

Great to sit under the overhang in the shade and watch the kids play. Waves are big and plenty of surfers. The playground is good so is the cafe. There are showers and toilets next to the cafe.
