This is a Japanese ryokan near Kobe City on Awaji Island south of the largest suspension bridge in the world (55% larger than the Golden Gate Bridge). The Tankaiso Inn is on the beach with an unobstructed view of the bridge. Just spectacular for engineering and bridge buffs. The AKASHI KAIKYO Bridge is a $3.6 Billion Dollar behemoth that you can view and take photos of right from your room. We had room 503, but there are others with good views too. The rate we paid was around $100 each / per night, which included dinner and breakfast, the room, and of course the million dollar view. There is a small WIFI Network on the premises, but I did not connect to it. I did not see a business room, but perhaps there are some minor facilities here. There is a men and ladies onsen (hot spa pools) with a regular plunge pool and a more natural looking stone ringed pool. Both have magnificent floor to ceiling views of the bay and bridge. This is a traditional Japanese Inn, so there is protocol to follow like showering outside of the pool and rinsing off before you get in. Shoes have to be taken off in the rooms and when eating in the breakfast room. But, slippers abound when needed. A tasteful dinner is served in the room, which can be upgraded to something more deluxe with more raw and cooked seafood delicacies, if desired. At 8 AM, a Japanese breakfast was served in the main floor dining room. (The seating is on flat Zabuton cushions, so if you are not used to that or inflexible, come prepared. Who knows! Maybe they would make some kind of compromise for inflexible western tourists, if queried.) A hostess will serve dinner and help you settle in for the evening. As soon as dinner is finished and the table cleared, she will return around 8 or 9 to prepare a very comfortable futon and pillow for sleeping. Being a bridge buff, I couldn't keep away from the small sitting area and table by the expansive window. After dinner, I got my camera gear together and went down to photograph the bridge. The inn is situated by the picturesque bay and in the small village of Awaji. Right next door is a park beneath the bridge with some stores and visitor amenities. Beyond the village is even an impressive 200 to 300 ft ferris wheel. I had the bridge to myself from 8pm to after 11pm. When I got back to the Ryokan the front door was locked. I went around to the back and found an unlocked door. (Might have been a good idea to inform the staff that I would be out late and let them give me instructions for getting back in.) The room has a western toilet room with a toilet with space-age electronic controls. One can manually flush the toilet and dispense with all the complexity. One twist of the handle flushes away number two; a twist in the opposite direction is for flushing lightly away number one. A nice sink and mirror area abuts the Japanese bath, which I prefer to western style baths. One showers outside the tub on a stool with a shower wand as the water exits by floor drain. The liquid body soap provided worked exceptionally well. After showering, an optional soak in the deep, clean tub is an option. I would rate this place exceptionally clean, but the corridor carpets were well past their prime. The shoeless areas including the room were very clean. Here and there are English signs. I believe some staff understand a little English. Emphasis is on the Japan experience though. My wife, who is Japanese, dealt with the details while I was out filming. That said, I am sure they welcome foreigners. A little Japanese language and cultural experience will go a long way, though. If you would like a Japan experience with an exceptional bridge view that won't break the bank, then this might be the place. The one night stayed, we really enjoyed!
