Two people approaching the age of 60, camping in a wildlife park! Yes and great fun too. We had booked fo Yala, which is nearby but overnight camping is no longer permitted there. In the event Bundala was more interesting, with excellent bird life in November. We arrived to a welcome fire, with a dinner table set out under the stars. Our tent was spacious with ensuite flushing toilet and a shower. In the evening and at 5 am a gas ring heated a tank behind the tent, providing hot water. The temperature could be erratic and it was not a luxurious shower but it served its purpose. The bed was comfortable, with a reasonable mattress. 7 staff catered to our needs plus a driver and a "naturalist". Food was good considering the environment. On the first night we were offered a prawn cocktail then a salad, before our main course. We worried a little about food poisoning (no freezer on site) but ate the food any way, enjoyed it and suffered no ill effects, which is a tribute to the care taken by the staff. Our only complaint about food was that there was too much, especially on the barbecue night, when there were7 or 8 large courses! Up at dawn to see the birds and indeed at 5 am to go further afield. Ended up seeing about 100 species in a two night stay and we are not proper ornithologists. Bee eaters everywhere and very beautiful they are. Lots of insects but surprisingly few bites. We cut our planned day trip to Yala to one afternoon, which still gave us time to see lots of deer and elephant, We were neither surprised or disappointed that we could not find a leopard, they are always elusive. We saw one solitary bull elephant in Bundala plus hares and mongoose. A really interesting and different thing to do between more conventional hotel stays.…
