We stayed in a self-catering cottage here as a base for walks in the Porongurup National Park. The mud brick building was divided into two units which were almost identical. The main issue we had was with cleanliness, and I see from other reviews that this is a common complaint. We first checked into Unit 2, and found that there was a lot of dust (so thick on the lampshades that it was three-dimensional!!) on horizontal surfaces. The rubbish bin lid was broken and very stained and dirty, and the fridge had not been turned on which meant that after our five hour trip down from Perth our Esky food had to stay in it for another hour or so before being unloaded. Also the fridge had only 1 shelf in the main compartment and no shelves at all in the freezer. The vegetable bin in the fridge still contained dried up remnants of the previous occupant's broccoli and other veggies. The following morning I complained to the owner about the condition of the unit and he suggested we should move to the Unit 1 next door, which was unbooked for the duration of our stay, and where at least the fridge was already turned on and had adequate shelving in both the main part and the freezer section. This unit had a bin with an intact lid, but was still very stained and dirty-looking. It was marginally better than unit 2, but not much. The beds were comfortable, but the bedding was too small for the queen beds, and the beds were badly made so that the sheets were uneven and all over one side. I completely remade our bed in Unit 1 before we slept in it because it would've been too uncomfortable to sleep in it as it was when we moved in. The quilt was a double and not queen sized, so it barely covered the bed. The lounges were reasonably comfortable, but they were covered with throws which weren't long enough and kept slipping off the sides. Overall we were not impressed with this accommodation, as it's not well maintained and very tired-looking. However, with everything else nearby being booked out, our options were limited. We would not stay here again if there were other choices available. One afternoon we decided to have Devonshire Tea in the cafe and that was excellent. When we went to pay the bill, the manager didn't charge us, as an apology for our disappointment about the accommodation and this was appreciated.…
