Very conveniently located on the Xiamen University campus about 300 yards from the conference centre. Highly convenient for visiting academics, but not near the centre of Xiamen itself. Unfortunately there are few concessions to non-Chinese speaking visitors, with staff's grasp of English very rudimentary. Communication with receptionist and service staff requires patience. Entrance quite grand and marbled, single lift with stairs not obvious. Rooms are perfectly adequate, but in need of a refurbishment. No non-smoking rooms available. Bathrooms very small, but ok for one. Not sure about two or more, though. Slight smell from the drains. Shower quite powerful, with basic selection of toiletries, tooth brush etc. Towel softish and adequate. Bed comfortable and supplied with three pillows. Old-fashioned cathode ray television with Chinese-only channels. Small desk with fast, free internet access. Breakfast included, but again no concession to Western tastes, but lots of variety if you can stomach Chinese food first thing in the morning. Slightly odd system of a ticket being left in your room for next day's breakfast, which you hand in to the staff before entering restaurant. Coffee dreadful, better off drinking the Chinese tea. Overall, convenient but requiring some adaptation to Chinese customs. If you are really particular about cleanliness, this would not be a good choice. In terms of stars, I would award it a 3.5.
