We were looking for accommodation on our way to Wrangell National Park and was recommended this place by someone at the gas station. The gave us couple of options and glad they suggested us this gem. Its a run by an elderly couple. When we checked in sweet Viola gave us homemade cinnamon rolls which were very good. The rooms are clean and we got our own private bath. The cabin is decently large and ours came with a bonus twin bed in addition to a queen bed! They also have free wifi. They keep cereals, milk, chips, ramen noodles for very reasonable price on honor system basis. Our stay was pleasant and we will definitely come back again!

This little nestling of cabins is off hwy 1 in Gakona. It's not much from the outside and the cabins are in need of some general updating and maintenance. Price wise, you can't beat it. Overall it turned out to be a fine place to stay for a stopover night or two.
The cabins are currently operated by an elderly couple, that are slowing down and are in the process of transitioning it to a new operator. This could potential be very good for this facility as a new owner/operator may revitalize it. The man is very matter-of-fact, but not in a bad way. I found myself chuckling through the entire tour of the cabin. Cabinets were well stocked with random items as well as snacks/food that you can pay for. Coffee is unlimited and free. Sweet rolls are included for breakfast as well. The snacks are on an honor system. You just leave cash on the table when you leave. Good stopover spot.

It's true it's not the ritz but I believe this little hidden gem is the heart of a travelers trip up the highway. Awesome hosts, great free cinnamon rolls, sweet dog, rabbit cages that the kids enjoyed. I'd give these folks my business over one of the big company places any day.
The cabins are HUGE compared to other cabins that are offered by other places, there is a full kitchen and besides our small master bedroom, there was four other bunks!!!

Traveling up the Richardson highway we found ourselves in need of lodging in the Glennallen area. The visitor center did not have much to suggest as the closest place was not well recommended. They did suggest one location over a garage at a private home. Once we found the place, with much difficulty, there was no one home but a sign on the door indicated there was guest arriving so it would not be available. We decided to try the Tok cutoff Hwy. and found the Gakona Lodge which appeared very nice, but they were full. The lodge recommended the Red Igloo Cabins. What a pleasant surprise. It was nothing to look at from the road or entrance, but don't be discouraged. This is operated by a real sweet, kind couple. They make home made sweet rolls they provide to guest. I jokingly commented about the outhouse being on fire and the owner showed me a whole batch of Salmon being smoked. he said they were not ready but promptly went into his house and brought out a large half of salmon and said enjoy. The cabins were very neat and clean. They were well stocked with the "honor system" of take what you want and leave the money on the counter. Most items were 25 to 50 cents. We clearly will make this our stop next time on the way to Tok and Fairbanks.
