The previous review to yours is headed “Authentic Excellence”. The interior of croft houses never were “quaint”. Some understanding of the social and economic history of the Highlands and Islands might have been useful before writing the review. Roskhill House is a very very early “white house” type of working croft house and was built around 1890 after the Napier Commission & Crofters Act of 1886 provided security of tenure. The house helped set the simple functional architectural style for the Island and is known as a 1¾ storey style. Most rooms had small simple fireplaces and the walls and ceilings were lined with tongue and groove like wooden slats. This offered little in the way of “charm” or insulation to conserve heat and gave the rooms a rather stark appearance. There was no electricity and little indoor washing facilities. Over 125 years the house and its use has evolved. By 1910 an extension to the house had become the Harlosh Post Office and village store and at one time petrol was also sold. As they became available more modern facilities such as electricity were installed. About 50 years ago the fireplaces were bricked up as more efficient and far less labour intensive methods of heating the house were becoming commonplace. Dunvegan was expanding and became the principle village in the area as roads and transport improved. Therefore in the early 1970’s the house evolved to become a Guest House. Around this time the old wooden slats needed to be replaced. More modern sheet materials were used and gave a lighter airier feel to the rooms. For the first time some insulation material would also have been added. I am sure that most current guests would prefer warmth, comfort and indoor facilities over “quaint”, whilst acknowledging that past and present renovations have kept the general feel of modest simplicity, whilst having to conform to the current building regulations. Having chosen to be downstairs in our smallest room you would not have seen the coombed (part sloping) ceilings of the upstairs bedrooms. A croft house reflects a far simpler lifestyle from your previous nights in a stylised, just renovated boutique hotel in a former Glasgow Greek orthodox church and a country house built in 1823 by a wealthy aristocratic family to rather grandiose and opulent interior designs. Our knowledge of the Island is good and, after we have finished serving breakfast we then have time to answer all and any questions. You certainly enjoyed the music evening at the Edinbane Inn, which we most likely told you about.

My wife and I stayed in the first-floor room in August 2018. The room was, I am told, the largest of the rooms. I recall the bed being queen size.
You will really enjoy staying there. Take some time to walk the area around the house and enjoy the creek nearby.
