Dear Backpacker_123_11,
We are a rather perplexed by this review! Your girlfriend notified us when she made the reservation that she was vegan and we said we would be happy to prepare a special meal for her. We did this - shopped for and prepared an alternative three course meal especially tailored to vegan dietary requirements which due to their very restrictive nature require a lot of thought and extra work for the chef, for one client. She didn't order the dessert which meant that in addition to the extra work and preparation there was food wastage which we didn't get a return on. And you want us to give you a discounted price for this meal because it didn't contain meat? Sorry, but that's not how it works and it's unfair of you to expect it.
As for the portion size of your meal, you ordered the lamb tenderloin which is the most expensive cut of meat on a lamb, therefore the portion is smaller. Perhaps you should have asked the waiter 'which is the biggest meal I can get?' and he would happily have advised you. I imagine you saw another guest's meal who had ordered the veal t-bone steak - yes, this is a bigger cut of meat.
We market ourselves as serving French/Mediterranean food, not Moroccan. The only inspiration we purport to take from here is the fresh, seasonal ingredients. My husband the chef (who greeted you and explained the vegan meal in person) is French and offers an alternative to tagines and couscous. As you pointed out, if that's the type of meal you want you can find it elsewhere in Fes at a cheaper price. Personally I think that for the setting, the service and the high-end food using top quality ingredients, you would be pushed to find a better value meal for 25-35 euros a head.
For other readers of this review, we play 1920s New Orleans jazz music in the restaurant as we think it adds to the transportative effect of the period surroundings and perfectly suits the tone we're going for in the restaurant. 99.9% of the time I get comments from our diners saying how much they love the music choice, so I guess you'll have to decide for yourselves!
Thanks for your comments,
Vanessa
