A fantastic day from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage!
Thank you very much for visiting Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and taking time to write us. It definitely is a great pleasure to hear your experience at PEO. Indeed if you want to see how the elephants perform their daily bath and having fun in water, you need to reach the river. It is located within walking distance of the institute and it certainly will give you a memorable experience to you.
A small number of elephant which you have noted are very aggressive and boisterous male elephants in our custody and it is necessary to keep them in limited mobility as they stab others when the free in riverside. Therefore, they are tied with one leg to confined to the place. Furthermore, the elephants in our custody are not tamed at all and we do not want to tame them at all. Since our primary goal is providing utmost comfort for them without any respite as other forms of abuse and cruel practices like riding and other taming activities.
Fruit feeding is just a great opportunity to feed and get close to the elephants at PEO and they are fond of having fruits from you. In addition, as you said they are a species of thick skin in the world.
A fantastic day from Pinnawala Elephant Orphange!
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Primary purpose of this institute is providing care and shelter to orphaned elephants that were stranded in the wild. As well as Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a breeding ground to the elephants. We lunched the captive breeding programme in 1982 and our first baby was born in1984 respectively. Since then 71 elephants have been bred in the facility which still under our guardianship.
Elephants are largest land mammals and it is not an easy task to protect them in a captive environment. Especially bull elephants are totally boisterous and aggressive in behavior. It is necessary to keep them under control for the safety of visitors as well as the animals too. All the females in the facility are not chained and they can roam around from morning to late evening. The ankus is used to guide the animal without provoking him. It is a modification tool work on animal’s sensitive points whenever necessary. Finally, this institute is dedicated to the conservation and welfare of elephants.
